Busy, busy, busy…

Welcome Back

It’s so wonderful to be open again and thank you to everyone who has popped into the shop for a browse, a chat and to buy books over the last two weeks. If you’ve not been in yet and seen our new bookcases in the back room, come and take a look…. some of you may recognise them from the old Lampeter university bookshop which closed a few years ago. We had no idea we would be booksellers when we bought them but they really do look at home and we think they’re a great addition to the shop!

If you love Crime Fiction….

It’s nearly time for the first Gwyl Crime Cymru Festival – all events this year are online. We are Partner Bookshop to Event #5 on Wed 28 April and the final Event #18 on Mon 3 May. Booking closes 24 hours before each event so don’t be disappointed – take a look, there’s a great variety of events to sign up to.

If you would like to order any of the books linked to our events, take a look here.

Prize Draw -Tir na n-Og Awards

We are delighted to be able to give away one copy of each of the nine shortlisted titles for the 2021
Tir na n-Og Awards. All you have to do is tell us which title you would like to win and send us your contact details. Enter using our contact form, by email or social media. Entries are open until Saturday 15 May. The books are all here if you’d like to take a look before deciding which one you’d like to win.

We’re so excited!

We are open from Monday 12 April. Mon – Sat 11am to 5pm

We’ve been making changes!

A massive thank you to artist Natalie Chapman for her fabulous artwork that has transformed the shop. The main mural depicts the stories of the Mabinogion (inspired by the illustrations of Valeriane Leblond in The Four Branches of the Mabinogi / Pedair Cainc y Mabinogi by Sian Lewis). We also asked Natalie to add a mural above the doorway into the back room -‘ Mor a Mynydd o Lyfrau’ (Sea and Mountain of Books) is the Welsh version of the Booksellers Association logo ‘Books are my Bag’ and we love it so much we’ve put it on the wall!

We’ve been busy!

We’ve also taken the opportunity to adapt the store room so that it’s now part of the shop – we’ve been busy moving bookcases and books. Who will recognise the bookcases we wonder – old Lampeter Uni students maybe? Come and take a look.

Making more space means just one thing – more new books! There are so many new titles that we’re excited about and can’t wait to show you. There have been some great new books published since the start of 2021; fiction, non fiction and for children. Maybe you’ve missed them during lockdown so we will happily tell you which are our favourite books that we’ve discovered over the last few months.

All new titles in stock can be found on the website but if there’s anything you can’t see just get in touch and we will probably be able to order it for you.

Subscribe to our newsletter

Our other main lockdown project has been to organise a monthly newsletter – if you’d like to find out more about new titles each month please subscribe. Just give us your email address, tick the box and we will add you to our mailing list.

Lockdown Again

Orders and Click & Collect

It is so disappointing for ourselves and all our customers to have to close the shop in the run-up to Christmas. In order to try and help those still looking to buy presents we are offering an order and Click & Collect service this week. We can also deliver locally to Aberaeron and wrap presents if required.

11am – 3pm on 22nd and 23rd December
10am – 3pm on 24th December

From 29th December Click & Collect of books ordered over the phone or online will be available by arrangement.

We are always open…

At this time we don’t know when we will reopen our doors for browsing but we are always able to take orders despite being in lockdown. If you don’t see what you want on the website, please contact us directly as we will probably be able to place an order with our distributor that will be delivered directly to your home.

Bookshop

We are excited to be part of Bookshop, a new initiative that gives you the opportunity to shop online if you cannot get out and about or find what you want on our website, while still supporting us. As long as Gwisgo Bookworm is the shop at the top of the page, for every book you buy we will receive 30% of the sale. A further 10% from each sale is put into a pool (the rolling total is shown at the top of the page) which is shared intermittently between all participating independent bookshops. There are lists curated by ourselves on our Bookshop webpage to give you a feel of what we like to stock in the shop while not being able to visit us in person. Bookshop is a B – Corp, a corporation dedicated to the public good and to find out more click here.

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda

Happy Christmas and a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us through what has been a very strange year! While 2021 is going to start in lockdown again we hope that it will improve as the year goes on and that the shop will be open for browsers before too long.

What’s on this week at Gwisgo Bookworm

Today it’s our 3rd birthday!

Three years ago on 28 September we took over Bookworm to create Gwisgo Bookworm, book and record shop. We would like to thank everyone for making us so welcome in Aberaeron and for all the tremendous support you have given us. Since we took over there has been a gradual evolution from largely 2nd hand books to a mix of new and 2nd hand. We both really enjoy the challenge of choosing a selection of new titles, fiction and non fiction, that covers a wide range of tastes and yet can be fitted into the small space we have in the shop. If not in stock we can always order books for you and we also love taking on the task of sourcing 2nd hand books that people aren’t able to find.

This year has been a very strange one so far and following the difficult weeks of lockdown we have been so lucky to have had a very busy summer as Aberaeron has been a popular destination for many tourists.
We are still happy to deliver locally or post books out to customers who are unable to visit the shop in person or are still choosing to stay at home. We will also be continuing our ‘BooktoBrowse’ scheme so that you can book a time to browse knowing that you will have the shop to yourself or with your family. We hope that people will find this useful when it comes to thinking about Christmas shopping – we are already seeing people thinking and buying ahead!

Bookshop Day – Saturday 3rd October

10% off all books this weekend

To celebrate our 3rd birthday and Bookshop Day we are offering 10% off all books, new and 2nd hand, on Saturday & Sunday 3 – 4 October. We hope you are able to join us as we say thank you to everyone who supports us.
(The offer won’t apply to new books that are already discounted and to any orders placed on the day.)

And don’t forget the gorgeous special edition tote bags….

After 12 weeks of enforced closure due to Covid-19 we are delighted to be able to reopen our door to customers on Monday 22 June.

During lockdown we have been selling books online and taking orders over the phone, by email or messenger. A huge thankyou to everyone who has supported us over the last 3 months. It has been a difficult and challenging time for everyone but books provide a means of learning, escape and relaxation for many people and we are delighted that we have been able to provide support.

But, we know that there is nothing like having a good browse for books and, as we reopen, we aim to create an environment that makes you feel happy to do this even though there will be some inevitable restrictions.

On reopening we will be asking our customers to:

Sanitise hands using the gel provided on entering the shop – this will also apply if you are wearing gloves. Feel free to use gel when you leave as well if you have been holding books.

We will only allow one person (or couple) per aisle to ensure social distancing.

Do not enter the shop if you have a cough or feel unwell with any Covid-19 symptoms.

Book 2 Browse

Shopping by appointment for anyone who would rather visit outside of opening hours, especially suitable for people who have been self isolating and for families.
